Celebrating its 25th anniversary, The Last Five Years is a modern musical classic written and composed by Tony Award–winning composer Jason Robert Brown.
The musical explores the complexities of love and the impact of personal ambition on relationships.
At its heart is the five-year marriage of Cathy, an aspiring actress, and Jamie, a rising novelist — two passionate, creative people whose dreams both unite and divide them.
Told through an innovative non-linear structure, Cathy’s story unfolds in reverse chronological order, beginning at the end of the marriage and moving backward to the hopeful early days of love.
Jamie’s journey moves forward in time, starting with their first meeting and ending with their eventual separation. The characters intersect only once — during their wedding song — a powerful theatrical moment that underscores the emotional distance that grows between them.
The Last Five Years is largely sung-through, with minimal dialogue, allowing the score to carry the emotional weight of the story. With its contemporary sound and deeply personal storytelling, the musical has become one of the most beloved and frequently produced works of the 21st century.
